The government of the People's Republic of China (est 1949) is officially atheist, however the state officially recognises five organised religions:

• Buddhism
• Taoism
• Islam
• Catholicism
• Protestantism

Buddhism and Taoism are favoured due to their inherent link to Chinese culture.
